Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges was awarded the FAPERJ call for applications, Scientist and Young Scientist of Our State, 2023 edition, for her work "CO2 foams as a technology to enhance advanced recovery projects and carbon storage in porous media".

The program promotes scientific research and technological advancement in our state, recognition that attests to the ongoing commitment to scientific excellence.

We shared experiences and ideas at a lunch that brought together our collaborators and our coordinator.

At the invitation of Professor Marinez and the Biology department at PUC-Rio, our coordinator, Professor Aurora Pérez Grmatges, spoke to the students about Energy Transition, Environmental Sustainability and Carbon Capture.

2023 has brought many achievements, successful master's and doctorate defenses, visits from partners and many published and exhibited works.
We celebrate this moment in style!

Through October 29 and November 3rd, Lasurf was present at the 17th Brazilian Congress of Polimers, represented by Master Cecilia Gonçalves with the work "Effect of Hydrolysis on the quantification of polyacrylamide sulfonate by SEC-UV".

On the 5th and 6th of October our coordinator Profa. Aurora Pérez Gramatges participated in the conference on carbon capture, use and stock hosted by Y-Tec. Presenting the work "CO₂ foams as a technology for the control of gas mobility in oil recovery and carbon sequestration".

On August 30th, our coordinator Profa. Aurora Pérez Gramatges and our researcher DSc. Luis Maqueira were very well received at the Laboratory of Soil Biological Chemistry at UFFRJ. Our brothers in innovation shared their findings regarding food safety, a very important topic today. We would like to thank the coordinator Andrés Calderín García and everyone for the welcome and enriching exchange. We hereby express our invitation for you to come and visit us as well.

Pablo Godoy defended his master's thesis entitled"Adsorption behavior of cocamidopropyl betaine on analogous reservoir rocks under static and dynamic conditions" under the guidance of  Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-supervision of former collaborator Dr. Juliana Façanha. 

Lina Daza defended her doctoral dissertation entitled"Effect of kerosene on interfacial properties and emulsion stability of a Brazilian heavy oil" under the guidance of  Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-supervision of Doctor of Sciences  Angela Duncke. 

Alessandra Pazini defended her doctoral dissertation entitled "Synthesis and characterization of fluorescent silica nanoparticles with potential application in transport and adsorption studies in porous medium", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-supervision of researcher Luis Maqueira Espinosa
 

LASURF researchers published the article "Effect of kerosene aromaticity as a solvent on bulk and interfacial properties of Brazilian heavy crude oil with high asphaltene content", made available online by The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering.

LASURF was very well represented at the 15th Annual International Conference on Porous Media – Interpore by our coordinator, Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges and Dr. Leandro Freitas Lopes.
On this occasion we also had the participation of Dr. Juliana Façanha, a former laboratory collaborator.
The event brought together scientists from around the world and our representatives contributed with exhibitions and oral presentations.

On a tour of the laboratories and equipment, the Surfactant Physical-Chemistry Laboratory received a delegation from the Norwegian partner, Equinor.

The visit made it possible to bring together teams of researchers who will work together on future projects.

Beatriz Azevedo defended her doctoral dissertation entitled "Stabilization of CO2 foams in high salinity brines using surfactants and nanoparticles", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges.

Brenda Duarte Gralha defended her master's thesis "Influence of polymer degradation on the analysis of polyacrylamide by total organic carbon", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-edited by D.Sc. Eduardo José Creatto.

During the Self-Assembly Structures in Solution and Interfaces (AutoOrg) event, the physical chemistry laboratory was well represented by the exhibition of the work of our researchers and doctoral students.

Vinícius Towesend defended his doctoral dissertation "Mixtures of bis-(2-hydroxyethyl) cocoalkylamine (C12) and other surfactants to obtain stable foams containing CO2 in conditions of salinity, high pressure and temperature", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-edited by Dr. Lucas Gomes Pedroni.

Luis Miguel Gutierrez Boleño defended his master's thesis "Development of oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by sustainable materials for controlled release of repellents", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-edited by Profa. Karen Edler. The thesis was published by JBCS (Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society)

André Pessanha Fonseca defended his master's thesis entitled "Influence of salinity and ionic composition of brines on the static adsorption of cocoamidopropyl betaine on travertine rock", under the guidance of Prof. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-edited by Profa. Patricia González Hernández.

LASURF researchers recently published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids the article entitled “Viscosity-driven stabilization of CO2-in-brine foams using mixtures of cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and sodium dodecyl sulfate”

LASURF's work on foam injection in carbonate rocks entitled: "Behavior of foams in analogous carbonate rocks: comparison with tracer curves and permeability effect" was approved among the top 350 for  to be presented in the Rio Oil and Gas 2020, between the 1st – 3rd of December 2020.

On Wednesday, 19/08/2020, our coordinator Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges,  together with Thaís Márcia Silveira (Equinor), Eliana Susuchi (UFS) and Milena Siqueira (Halliburton), participated in the round table “Research, Development and Innovation (R,D&I): Contributions to Industry, Society, and Future Perspectives”  organized by the WIN SPE Brazil Section.
The event was moderated by Ingrid Fonseca Ventura, a member of WIN Brazil.

Cecília Cavalcanti do LASURF defended her master's thesis entitled "Stability of CO2 foams from formulations with amine oxides in a highly saline environment", under the guidance of Profa. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-orientation Dr. Bruno Giordano Alvarenga.

On Thursday 23/07/2020, a member of our group,  Juliana Façanha , together with Homayra Tavares and Rafaela Furtado, participated in the live   "How increase the oil recovery factor: A regulatory view – Onshore to Offshore" , where an overview of how to increase the recovery factor of Brazilian fields onshore and offshore was presented. The live was organized by the SPE UVA Student Chapter and moderated by Bruna Vale.  Participants gave an overview of the technical and regulatory factors that are preventing higher recovery factors from being achieved in Brazil as well as technologies and regulatory adjustments that can be applied to achieve greater oil production.

Between the 6th and 9th of July, researchers Leandro Freitas, Eduardo Creatto, Juliana Façanha, Bruno Giordano and Prof. Aurora Pérez  presented our research at the EUFOAM 2020 conference (online) which is the most important “studies of foam” conference ( https://eufoam2020.aber.ac.uk/overview/ ).  We are proud to be the only Latin American group to participate in the conference!

On September 14, 2019, a member of our group, Luis Maqueira, received the award   the best poster (1st place) at the III Workshop on Applications of Polymers and Surfactants in Solution, with the work entitled:
"Stability study of CO2-foam by commercial surfactants in the presence of different nanoparticles for application in enhanced oil recovery"
The work presented was carried out in co-authorship with other members of LASURF: Paloma Moura (IC), Caio da Cruz Mello (Tec.), Aurora Pérez Gramatges (PI)

On September 14, 2019, LASURF and M&N Lab groups organized together o  III Applications Workshop de Polymers and Surfactants in Solution ._cc781905-5cbbde-3194 -136bad5cf58d_This year, the theme was:  Challenges in the Oil Industry: from exploration to application
The event had 110 participants, among them, participants from several companies (CENPES/PETROBRAS, Dow, Láctea, Instrutécnica, Reoterm, SNF Brasil, Shell, Stepan) and universities (PUC-Rio, UERJ , UFF, UFBA, UFES, UFRJ, UFRRJ, UIS, UNICAMP) 3239-9149-20813d6c673b_

Undergraduate students Paloma Guimarães de Moura, Pablo Albuquerque Godoy and André Pessanha Fonseca presented, at the Scientific Initiation Day of the Department of Chemistry, their research work entitled, "Study of the chemical stability of commercial surfactant formulations for use in injection fluids en pre-salt reservoir" (Paloma) and "Mathematical modeling of the density and viscosity of brines and creation of a GUI to implement the model" (Pablo and Andre).

Júlio Cesar Carvalho Venancio from LASURF defended his master's thesis entitled "Silica nanoparticles modified with alkoxysilanes for use as surfactant nanocarriers in advanced oil recovery", under the guidance of Profa. Auróra Pérez Gramatges and co-supervision of Prof. Regina Sandra Veiga Nascimento (UFRJ).

The student Lina Mercedes Daza Barranco, supervised by Prof. Dr. Aurora Pérez-Gramatges received an award for the highlight of her work in the field of Physical Chemistry, presented at the II Postgraduate and Research Conference at DQ PUC-Rio.

Lina Mercedes Daza Barranco do LASURF defended her master's thesis "Silica nanoparticles functionalized with ammonium groups and anionic polymers for stabilization of Pickering emulsions containing insect repellents", under the guidance of Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges and co-supervision of Prof. Ana M. Percebom.

The groups M&N Lab and LASURF jointly published the review entitled: Sustainable Self-Assembly Strategies for Emerging Nanomaterials

Luis Miguel Gutiérrez Beleño from the Colloids and Interfaces Group (LASURF) defended his master's thesis "Hybrid Silica Nanoparticles for Stabilization of Biphasic Dispersions", under the guidance of Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges e co-advised by Dr. Luis Maqueira Espinosa.

The group of Prof. Aurora Pérez Gramatges published the article entitled: Stability of Liquid Foams of Surfactant Solutions: Effect of Mixtures and Addition of Nanoparticles.
